Privacy policy
Last updated 10 October 2026
Five Olives is an iPhone app that judges recipes against the Mediterranean diet, general health and the needs of the people you cook for. It's built to know as little about you as possible: there's no account, no advertising and no tracking. This policy explains what that means in practice.
The short version
- You don't create an account. We never ask for your name, email or phone number.
- Your household's details and your saved recipes are stored on your iPhone, not on our servers.
- To analyse a recipe, the app sends the recipe and your household's details to our server, which asks an AI model (Claude, by Anthropic) for the answer. We don't store the recipe or your household's details.
- We count how many analyses each install has used, against an anonymous ID, to enforce the free allowance.
- We collect anonymous usage statistics that contain no recipe text and nothing you wrote.
- We don't sell or share your data, show ads or track you across other apps and websites.
Who we are
Five Olives is made by an independent developer, who is named as the seller on the app's App Store page and is responsible for your data (the "controller"). You can reach us at hello@fiveolives.app.
What stays on your iPhone
Your Household Profile (what you write about the people you cook for, such as who's eating, foods they never eat, allergies and goals), your saved recipes with their analyses and your settings are stored only in the app on your iPhone. They're included in your iPhone's own backups if you use iCloud Backup or back up to a computer, which Apple handles under its own privacy policy. We can't see them. Deleting the app deletes them.
What the app sends to analyse a recipe
Each time you analyse a recipe, ask for its Healthier Version or import notes into your Household Profile, the app sends:
- the recipe text you pasted, or the link you pasted (our server then fetches that web page to read the recipe);
- your Household Profile text, if you've written one; for a Healthier Version, also the recipe and Swaps from its analysis;
- for an import, the notes you pasted.
Our server, the Analysis Service, passes this to Anthropic's Claude model, returns the answer to your iPhone and doesn't store the request or the answer. It keeps short-lived technical error logs (for example, that a web page couldn't be read), which may include the link you pasted but never your Household Profile.
Anthropic processes the request on our behalf under its commercial terms. It doesn't use it to train its models, and it deletes it after a limited period, unless it must keep it longer to investigate misuse or to comply with the law.
Health information. Your Household Profile can contain health information if you choose to write it, such as an allergy or a condition you're cooking for. It's sent only so the analysis can take it into account, and only when you ask for an analysis. You decide what to write, and the app works without a profile.
Your free allowance and subscription
The first time you open the app, it creates a random ID for this install. With each analysis, the app sends that ID together with a proof from Apple (App Attest) that the request comes from the genuine app on a real iPhone. Our server records how many analyses that ID has used, so it can give each install 3 free analyses and apply the monthly limit of a subscription. Apple's DeviceCheck stores on Apple's side whether this iPhone has used its free analyses, so reinstalling the app doesn't reset them. None of this contains your name, Apple ID or any other detail about you.
Subscriptions are bought and billed through Apple. We never see your payment details. We use RevenueCat to check whether an install's subscription is active: RevenueCat receives the anonymous ID and Apple's record of the purchase (product, dates, price and country).
Usage statistics
We use TelemetryDeck to understand how the app is used, for example how many people finish their first analysis or open the subscription screen. The events contain no recipe text, no Household Profile and nothing you typed. TelemetryDeck receives an anonymised, hashed ID instead of a device identifier, doesn't store IP addresses and doesn't use advertising identifiers. The app never asks to track you, because it doesn't.
This website
fiveolives.app has no cookies, no analytics and no third-party scripts. Our host, Cloudflare, processes the technical data any website needs to deliver a page (such as your IP address) and may keep it briefly for security.
Who helps us run Five Olives
- Cloudflare hosts the Analysis Service and this website.
- Anthropic provides the AI model that writes the analyses.
- Apple provides the App Store, purchases, App Attest and DeviceCheck.
- RevenueCat checks subscriptions.
- TelemetryDeck provides anonymous usage statistics.
Each acts on our instructions under a data processing agreement. Some of them are based in the United States or process data there. Where the law requires it, transfers are covered by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's standard contractual clauses (with the UK addendum for UK data).
Why we use your data (for the UK and EU)
- Analysing your recipes and providing your subscription: to provide the service you asked for (contract).
- Health information you choose to include in your Household Profile: your explicit consent, given when you write it and ask for an analysis. You can withdraw it by removing it from your profile.
- Counting analyses, preventing abuse and anonymous usage statistics: our legitimate interest in running a fair, working service.
How long we keep it
- Recipes, Household Profiles and analyses: not stored on our servers.
- Technical error logs: a few days.
- The analysis count for an install's ID: as long as the app is offered, so the free allowance can't be reset.
- Usage statistics: up to two years, in anonymised form.
- Subscription records at RevenueCat: as long as needed for the subscription and for tax and accounting law.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you have the right to access, correct or delete your personal data, to object to or restrict how it's used, to data portability and to withdraw consent. Because there's no account, we usually can't link any data on our servers to you. Everything you entered lives on your iPhone, where you can change it or delete it with the app. For anything else, write to hello@fiveolives.app and we'll answer within a month. If you're in the UK or EU, you can also complain to your data protection authority, such as the UK Information Commissioner's Office.
California and other US states: we don't sell or share personal information, and we don't use it for targeted advertising.
Children
Five Olives isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them.
Where the app is available
The app is sold in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.
Changes
If we change how the app handles data, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect. For a significant change, the app will tell you.
